Wisdom vs. Knowledge

I've thought about the differences between being wise and being intelligent. I am reading a recent essay from Paul Graham entitled "Is It Worth Being Wise?" and he says that wisdom is knowing what to do in certain situations while intelligence is well....quite similar but there are some gray areas. I've always thought that wisdom was much different from knowledge or intelligence.

Wisdom is being smart about life, being reflective, and thinking about ways to explain everything. Wisdom can almost be thought of as a route to intelligence. When you have wisdom and use it you can be, for lack of better word, smarter and learn better; you grow from experience amentally and physically by retaining and applying knowledge. I like to relate wisdom to crew. Coach always says that rowing is "90% mental" and that you have to believe you can do better in order to do it. You may be strong, but that doesn't mean you can move a boat; you have to make every stroke stronger than the one before it. Wisdom is having the mentality and mental capacity to accomplish your tasks and respond to problems.

Intelligence, on the other hand, is knowledge of facts. You may know the physics of rowing and you know what good technique is but even the strongest person in a crew isn't the most contributing member, although it certainly helps. Just because you know a lot of facts and information doesn't mean you can be wise.

Face First Into the Sky

I've been beginning to make up some songs on guitar and bass, starting to think about that solo project. I came up with Face First Into the Sky as a name for something....maybe an album or song, i dunno. Once I find/get some proper recording apparatus I'll start putting together the songs and try to make up some words.

the scene

So I was just urbaning up on some random stereotypes and I came upon scenester. The descriptions seemed pretty accurate but the pictures had me torn. At first I was thinking, "that's hardly scene, that's called emo...just needs some Dashboard Confessional and guys in their girlfriend's jeans," but then I realized, emo IS scenester. I mean, there's certainly a difference, but there isn't really such thing as a unique emo (for lack of a better noun). Stereotypical emo: all black, tight shredded jeans, hoodie, pin striped chuck taylors, and obnoxious hairstyles...and since they're basically trying to conform to that one sense of style then they're following that definition of scenester; "a person who tries very hard to fit the stereotype of a certain scene."

I heard about some band called Get Him Eat Him and they're coming out with a new cd by this summer called "arms down." I listened to some mp3s on their site (http://www.armsdown.com/) and they sounded pretty decent....no intense rock ballads but not at all Death Cab-esque, very cheery. Might check it out.
The band's website is actually:

Paintball

The last paintball extravaganza ended in my marker freezing up....i took it apart and set it in front of the fire and fixed a couple things that were wrong with it. I think I've decided it best to just replace it. I'll definetly keep my Rebel '02 but I'm lookin for a cheap sniper, there's a decent Spyder at the locals Dick's that i might buy for myself (birthday is tomorrow 3/15).
The list of faults in my gun...

- froze (had to take apart)
- safety doesn't work
- mysterious o-ring dissapearing on the little chamber things (easily fixed)
- cocking/trigger mechanisms are jolty
- loose bottom line, loose threading on the inside of the handle, screws don't fit

I'll just buy a new gun...I might have to put off the widescreen computer monitor for awhile though. This thing has treated me well...I'll miss it.

Games, Computers, and battling Spoons.

Well first of all I just finished reading an interview with the Game Director for Age of Conan:

I've been looking at it for awhile, trying to decide on my next MMO, and it sounds like an amazing game! Much more action and story oriented than most cliche, point-and-click, grind-your-ass-off, WoW clones that are around the market these days, can't wait til next christmas!

Also, my new computer seems to be a go...almost got enough money (it's gonna be just under 1,100) I've had some second thoughts but it'll probably be for the best. I've been having trouble deciding on what parts to use with mixed reviews and tutorials, but I've got a good two months to worry about it. Hopefully by then Vista well be working properly.

On the concert front i went to Battle of the Bands last night and it was quite a show. The first couple were enjoyable, had some good musicians and song choices, but the last two were the interesting ones. The last band was The Casual Fridays, somewhat famous around campus, they were expected to be one of the best and they did end up winning...enjoyed them a lot. The interesing band was 1000 Plastic Spoons. I'm friends with most of them, or are at least acquainted, they did a blow out job...for freshman. In song choices and musicians they were very close to Casual Fridays, I'm sure the juniors and seniors were not happy to see such competition from freshman....nothing bad happened though, was an honorable show.

Next year should be interesting...Spoons are a shoe in and Infrastructure is thinking about trying out...hopefully we actually do something RIGHT this time.
